Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Reds endure yet another (Dale?) "Murphy's Law" series, as our chokin' chumps at the plate, in the field and on the mound were unfortunately NOT in rare form.... Game 1: Cincy starter Bruce Berenyi took a 2-0 lead into the middle innings, but the Arson Squad (4 late runs) with some aid from our chokers at the plate (11 LOB) finally turned that 2-0 lead into a 6-2 defeat, as they've conspired to do so many times before. Game 2: Cincy starter Milt Wilcox took a 3-0 lead into the middle innings.... and although he blew the lead as required by Strat Law, the Reds came back against the Atlanta bullpen and salvaged our only win of the series. Final score: 6-3. Game 3: For about the 30th time in 1982, Mario Soto mysteriously switched cards with his mound opponent. Today he absorbed John Denny's card and was battered for 6 runs in 6 innings. Meanwhile Denny, using Soto's card, tossed a complete-game 5-hitter, thereby reducing his season ERA below the 6.0 mark. Game 4: Tom Seaver, the one and only Reds starter who isn't massively underachieving (how could he, with that card?), is still making great strides in that direction lately. Today being no exception, he allowed 6 runs in less than 3 innings - with 4 of them (exactly enough to lose the game) unearned thanks to some timely defensive incompetence - digging a hole that was too deep for our 11-LOB batting performance to overcome.
