One run was the difference at Wrigley Field as the Los Angeles Dodgers
defeated the hapless Chicago NL Cubs 5 to 4.

Los Angeles won the game with a run in the 9th inning.  After an out was
recorded, Steve Sax doubled.  One out later, Pedro Guerrero came up and he
stroked a base-hit scoring the run.  Los Angeles took care of Chicago NL with
no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Tom Niedenfuer(5-4) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.
Niedenfuer got relief help from Steve Howe who gained credit for his 28th
save.  Willie Hernandez(2-4) was tagged with the loss in relief.

The Los Angeles ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 75-56.
Alan Bosslet was pretty down after the loss.  'We've really been sputtering
along lately, something like 1-9 in the last week or two.  That won't get it
done.'

Right fielder Dusty Baker smashed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as theleague
door-mat Chicago NL Cubs were badly beaten by the Los Angeles Dodgers, 13 to
3.

Baker was unconscious out there.  While Chicago NL pitching was serving
softballs up there for him to hit, the Chicago NL fans were serving up some
hardball barbs when he entered the batter's box.  But he just used it as fuel
for the fire.  He clubbed a three-run home run in the 1st inning, delivered a
single plating a run in the 2nd inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 31st
of the season) in the 3rd inning.  Overall Los Angeles out-hit Chicago NL 12
to 8.

Frank Dipino(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing
2 runs. Doug Corbett was credited with his 3rd save.  Randy Jones(4-8)
suffered the loss.  He gave up 8 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings and saw his ERA
jump from 5.69 to 6.31.

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Baker said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'

Leon Durham had 4 hits and scored 4 times at Wrigley Field where the Chicago
NL Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in 10 innings by the score of 7 to
6.

The score was tied at 6 after nine.  Chicago NL came out on top in the 10th
inning.  Durham laced a one-base hit.  After another out, Jody Davis got his
turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.  Bill Buckner then stroked a
single.  Doug Flynn stepped in and he laced a base-hit giving Chicago NL the
win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.  Los Angeles was out-hit by
Chicago NL, 15 hits to 11.

Lee Smith(7-2) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Steve Howe(3-1)
absorbed the loss in relief.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 3 hits and
no walks.

Terry Puhl had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Jerry Reuss allowed Billy Vanson to
rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Los Angeles Dodgers
outscored the Chicago NL Cubs 5 to 1.

The game started off with Los Angeles taking the lead in the first plating an
isolated run using 2 hits.  Los Angeles totaled 14 on the afternoon.

Reuss(11-11), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. The losing
pitcher was Paul Moskau(1-3).  He surrendered 4 runs and 11 hits in 5 and 2/3
innings.

The Los Angeles ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 77-57.
Alan Bosslet was unhappy with his club's recent performance.  'We can't keep
losing games' he said.  'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'
