Game 1 Johnny Ray smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the Montreal Expos 7 to 4.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Ray. He stroked a one-base hit in the 1st inning, delivered a solo blast in the 3rd inning, tripled scoring a run in the 4th inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 5th of the season) in the 7th inning. Pittsburgh had 13 hits overall, while Montreal had 7.
The win went to Kent Tekulve (8-5) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Bob Walk gained credit for his 1st save. Bill Gullickson (15-4) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park tonight,' Ray said. 'I'm glad I decided to play!'
Game 2 Larry Christenson mowed down 10 Pittsburgh batters at Three Rivers Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 5 to 2.
Christenson (11-9) pitched well for Montreal in their victory. He allowed 7 hits and no walks in 8 innings. Montreal rapped out 9 hits for the night.
Jeff Reardon earned his 32nd save. Don Robinson (11-13) ended up with the loss. Christenson didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had 10 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'
Game 3 Scott Sanderson went 6 strong innings as the Montreal Expos outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings 4 to 1.
The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings. Montreal won the game in the 11th inning. Tim Raines led off and started the rally when he reached on an error. Andre Dawson came to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Mike Schmidt then drew a walk. Al Oliver stepped in and he lined a single knocking in a run. Gary Carter stepped into the box and ripped a base-knock scoring one more run. Harold Baines added to the uprising and smacked a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Pittsburgh went down quietly in the bottom of the 11th.
The win went to Bryn Smith (3-3) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Smith got help from Jeff Reardon who was credited with his 33rd save. Kent Tekulve (8-6) was the loser in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Game 4 At Three Rivers Stadium the Montreal Expos easily handled the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 5 to 1.
In the top of the 3rd inning Montreal went on top for good plating an isolated run. That was all the offense they were to need. Montreal rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon.
The victory went to Steve Rogers (18-8) who went 8 innings, allowing 1 run. John Candelaria (10-11) absorbed the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.
