Game 1 Charlie Lea carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning and Harold Baines smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 9 to 0 at Busch Stadium.
Baines was unconscious all evening. The St. Louis fans hated to see him approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He cracked a solo homerun in the 2nd inning, stroked a one-base hit which plated a run in the 3rd inning and smacked a three-run homer (his 23rd of the season) in the 7th inning. Montreal had 14 hits for the night.
It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Lea (13-3). The right-handed Lea had his no-hit bid broken up by Dane Iorg who singled with nobody out in the 8th inning. Dave Lapoint (5-12) ended up with the loss.
When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Lapoint was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Lea brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
Game 2 Steve Rogers was only 1 out away from a no-hitter as the incredible Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 to 0 at Busch Stadium.
Rogers (21-9) came through with a virtuoso performance against the St. Louis hitters. He allowed just 1 hit and 3 walks in 9 innings. The right-handed Rogers lost his no-hit bid when Glenn Brummer doubled with two outs in the 9th inning. Montreal had a total of 7 hits for the game.
John Martin (3-1) was given the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.
Game 3 Tim Raines hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI at Busch Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 9 to 3.
In the top of the 5th inning Montreal went on top for good as they scored 3 runs on 4 base hits. The key at-bat was by Jamie Quirk who silenced the stadium when he lined a single plating two runs. For the game Montreal out-hit St. Louis 14 to 6.
The win went to Bill Gullickson (17-5) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. John Stuper (10-7) was given the loss. He surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.
Game 4 10,547 fans watched an exciting game at Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals topped the Montreal Expos by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
St. Louis scored the deciding run in the 8th inning. Mike Ramsey delivered a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Glenn Brummer came up and he smacked a single. One out later, Tito Landrum stepped up to the plate and he doubled scoring the run. Montreal had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The win was credited to Bruce Sutter (2-9) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs. Jeff Reardon (7-8) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 3 hits in 1 inning. |
