Subject: pads showing improvement
Although the Pads drop 3 of 4 to the tiny Red Machine, the offense is starting to show signs of life. Their 5 highest scoring games have occurred in their last 8 contests, and the batting average has finally cracked the Mendoza line. In fact, as of my play, they are no longer the worst average in the game! game 1: Pads take advantage of poor play by the Reds to win the opener 5-3. Pads score in top of first on a tommy helms error. THe lead would last all of two batters as " " ( I refuse to use his name) leads off with a triple and scores on a sac fly. A single, sac bunt, single scores one in the 4th for the pads and a second scores on an infield hit when Helms throws the ball away for his second error of the game. THe lead would last til the 6th when 4 straight singles ties the game and chases starter Joe Niekro. Gary Ross would come in and retire 3 straight to preserve the tie. Two walks (out of 7 for the game) start the pads 8th. Another sac bunt puts them on 2nd and 3rd, when Fred Tolbat unleashes a wild pitch to plate the winning run. Nate Colbert would follow with a single up the middle to add an insurance run. game 2: Pads outhit the Reds 6-5 but lose 4-1. Game was 1-0 going into the bottom of the 8th, when the Padres put their stone (oops leather) to work. A one out error by 3b Spezio looks harmless when Jim Beauchamp hits into a force play. A walk and single plate one when Johnny Bench hits one down the line. Ed Speizio makes a dving stop and then makes an ill advised throw into the stands allowing 2 more runs to score. San Diego would score one in the 9th to avoid the shutout. Jerry Arrigo picks up the complete game win while Al Santorini suffers the complete game loss. game 3: This one is over early. Reds score one in 2nd and add 4 in 3rd (thanks to yet another pads error). The big blow is a 2 run Tony Perez homer. Neither team does much after that in a 5-0 Cincy win. Jim Maloney pitches his 2nd shutout of the year against the Pads in getting the win. game 4: a see saw affair that sees the pads drop their fourth straight extra inning game (including 3 to the reds). SD scores 3 in top of 2nd, thanks to a squeeze bunt and sac fly, but reds get 2 back in bottom of the inning. The Reds would tie it in the 4th. SD would retake the lead in the 7th, thanks to 3 more walks ( 56 coming into the series, 20 in the series) and a Nate Colbert 2 run single. Jack Baldschun was called in from the pen and promptly gave up a pair of 2 run homers to put Cincy ahead 7-5. SHowing they weren't about to quit, the Pads come right back with 2 in the top of the 8th to tie the game.. IT would stay that way until, the bottom of the 11th, when the unnamed red bet his teammates that he could hit a homerun to end the game. Needless to say, he managed to collect on the bet... San Diego management is filing a formal complaint over the sandy condition of the basepaths in the series. 4 runners were thrown out trying to advance, while Cincy was 1-5 trying to steal... Mike |
