Subject: Blue Jays @ A's
With both of the 1983 home and road openers in the books and the Blue Jay season sinking fast, Toronto fought back (at least on the road) and staved off elimination for another week. After our outrageous defensive performance in game 1, the Jays successfully converted 14 consecutive x plays through game 3 before reverting to form.... Game 2: With Lary Sorensen on the mound for the Jays, it looked like the Toronto Titanic would hit our third iceberg of the season, but it was not to be. Sorensen tossed what will surely be his finest game of the entire season, scattering 5 hits in a complete-game 5-1 victory. Jesse Barfield's HR-laden 3 column provided most of the offense, as it would later in the series too. Charlie Hudson's MLB debut for the A's was a good one, as he left the game in the 7th with a shutout going - but two A's relievers suffered immediate gopher attacks and Hudson was stuck with a tough loss. Game 3: Dave Stieb (9 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 8 K) recovered nicely from his home-opening disaster against Detroit, while Chris Codiroli was beaten up by the Toronto batters. Final score: 7-2, and it could easily have been worse, what with the Jays stranding 6 more runners in scoring position. The A's hit the ball hard - if not often - against Stieb: of the 6 hits he allowed, only one was a single; the other 5 were doubles. Game 4: Jesse Barfield (2 HR, 5 RBI) struck again, and the Jays were able to prevail despite Jim Gott duplicating the way he performed for most of the 1982 season. Final score: 7-4. We made the most of our 7 hits today, and Odell Jones tossed 3 scoreless innings to earn Blue Jay save #1 of 1983. Alan |
