The Pirates jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 5 innings and it looked like Jose DeLeon was going to cruise home with an opening day victory. But the Expos came storming back led by Tony Bernazard who had 5 hits and 4 RBI at THREE RIVERS STADIUM where the Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 14 to 5.
Bernazard was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He doubled in the 4th inning, laced a base-hit in the 6th inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 7th inning, delivered a single which scored a run in the 8th inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 1st of the season) in the 9th inning. For the game Montreal out-hit Pittsburgh 18 to 8.
Dan Schatzeder (1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Jose Deleon (0-1) was the loser. He allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. 'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park tonight,' Bernazard said. 'I'm glad I decided to play!'
