Subject: 1982 World Series wrap-up
Every hitter wants to go out on top. Every batter wants their final at-bat to be at the end of a successful season, in a meaningful game. They want to make solid contact, circle the bases, and hear the cheers of the home crowd one ... last ... time. It is safe to say that Reggie Smith did just that. Or perhaps he would prefer to be called World Series MVP Reggie Smith. Smith hit .333 for the series, with 3 homers in what would be his last season as a professional, having announced his retirement prior to the World Series. And while the second of those was a bottom-of-the-ninth walk-off shot surrendered by Jeff Reardon in game 3, it will surely be the last of the three that is long remembered on the South Side. With two on and one out in the bottom of the seventh in a 2-2 game, Smith came to bat for the last time in his career, and clouted a 3-run homer (also off Reardon) to give the White Sox a 5-2 lead that they would not relinquish. Smith came out to play first in the top of the ninth, but was lifted for a defensive replacement, giving him the chance to walk off the field to the roars of the Chicago faithful.
It was an epic World Series, with only one game that wasn't particularly close. Game 1 was a 5-4 White Sox win in what is believed to be SMILEY World Series record of 16 innings; 47 players saw action, in what is also believed to be a record. The Sox won game 2 in less-dramatic fashion: 8-4 behind Floyd Bannister. Game 3 was another one-run nailbiter, ended 6-5 by Reggie Smith's lead-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. The Expos rallied in game 4, taking the lead early on a two-run homer by Harold Baines and never letting up until a 4-2 win behind Steve Rogers. But the Sox ended the series in 5, 5-2, making the Sox the 1982 SMILEY World Series champions. -- "Information is a beacon, a cudgel, an olive branch, a deterrent, depending on who wields it and how."
