Game 1 Harold Baines cracked 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 11 to 3.
Baines was really in 'the zone'. He popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 3rd inning, hit a single plating two runs in the 4th inning and hit a bases-empty home run (his 3rd of the season) in the 9th inning. Montreal had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.
The win was credited to Vern Ruhle (2-0) who went 7 innings allowing 3 runs. Craig Swan (1-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings.
'Some days it just all comes together, and this was one of them' Baines said. 'I've been seeing the ball pretty well lately.'
Game 2 Right fielder Harold Baines left the yard and had 4 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 9 to 5.
Baines had a good evening at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 4th of the season) in the 2nd inning, slapped a one-base hit plating two runs in the 3rd inning and hit a single in the 8th inning. Montreal had 16 hits overall, while New York NL had 9.
The win was credited to Bill Gullickson (2-1) who went 6 innings allowing 4 runs. Ed Lynch (0-2) was the loser. He allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings.
Game 3 Steve Carlton racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the New York NL Mets defeated the Montreal Expos by the score of 5 to 4 at SHEA STADIUM.
Carlton (1-2) was very good in the win. He gave up just 4 hits and 7 walks in 8 innings. Montreal made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Carlton got relief help from Jesse Orosco who gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Dan Schatzeder (1-1) in relief.
'Everything felt great' Carlton said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'
Game 4 Third baseman Mike Schmidt left the yard and had 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 4 to 3.
Charlie Lea (2-0) pitched a solid game. He surrendered 5 hits and no walks in 7 innings. New York NL made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Jeff Reardon recorded his 3rd save. Walt Terrell (0-3) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Jon Fellows 'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.' |
