Subject: Yaz v. Perranoski in the bottom of the 9th
Game two of the Twins Red Sox series at Fenway was a thrilling disappointment for 35,020 Sox fans on Tuesday Night. In the bottom of 9th with two out and the Sox down 5-4, 1967 Triple Crown winner Carl Yastrzemski came to plate for Boston with runners on 1st and 3rd. While it was it was not Bob Gibson on the mound in the seventh game of the 67 World Series, it was Ron Perranoski who had helped defeat these very same Twins in the 65 World Series as a Dodger. What a great early season dramatic match up. Yaz, the heart of the Red Sox, future hall of famer against Perranoski, a good, solid reliever off to a great start - and arguably the Twins most valuable player early in 1969. The tying run on third, the Sox down to their last out. And... Yaz hit the ball well to right, but Tony Oliva was playing him perfectly and made the catch toward the right field corner to give the Twins a 5-4 victory and to silence the crowd. The crowd slowly filed out of Fenway only to wonder what could have been. The Twins had gotten out to an early 5-2 lead and hung on over 5 innings to win 5-4. Starter Jim Perry won his 5th against no losses giving up 4 runs in 6 innings of work. Bob Locker pitched a perfect 7th, and Perranoski pitched the 8th and 9th to earn his 11th save. Killebrew and Mitterwald each had 2 RBI for the Twins. Perry helped his cause with a Sac Fly in the 4th. For Boston, rookie Mike Nagy (3-3) gave up three quick runs before giving way to Ray Jarvis in the 4th. Reggie Smith and Yastrzemski each had an RBI while Dalton Jones had two RBI for Boston as he went 3 for 3 with a homerun, his 1st. The rubber game is to be played tomorrow afternoon, a businessman's special. |
