Subject: Reds @ Braves

The Reds win the first two contests, but some timely sabotage defense by our two best fielders (one wouldn't have been enough) in game 3 and our pitchers returning to Home Run Derby form in game 4 force us to settle for a split....

Game 1: Ted Power escaped serious damage in his first start of 1983, a late rally offset the fact that we had choked away a late 2-run lead in the first place, and the bullpen narrowly averted disaster in the 9th.  Final score: 5-2.  Both teams stranded the bases loaded in the 9th, but the Reds had the good judgement to score 3 runs first.  Allan Ramirez then promptly issued 3 free passes to the Braves in their 9th, bringing the losing run to the plate, but Bill Scherrer retired Glenn Hubbard to end the game.

Game 2: Cincy outhit the Braves 11-4 but could not avoid making it a close contest, winning again by the score of 5-2.  Bruce Berenyi was effective as usual and the offense added 6 XBH including 2 homers to our 11-hit attack, but could not pull away.

Game 3: With a 3-2 lead in the 7th, our e5 replacement at third base made an error on the first batter he faced, which Mario Soto followed up with an immediate gopher ball.  The Reds tied the score but Randy 'e5' Johnson came through for his former club again by stranding the bases loaded in the 9th, and we choked up the losing unearned run in the 11th when our other ex-ATN defensive whiz led off the inning with a 2-base error in center field, the charity runner then being wild pitched to third and scoring on (ex-CIN) Lee Lacy's single.

Game 4: A 2-0 lead in the 5th vanished in a hurry when the Cincy mound corps suddenly got homer-happy.  Three gophers later, the Braves had won by the score of 7-3.  Bob Boone homered again for the Reds, his 4th of the year, and he now (despite playing 23 games, batting over .360 and hitting in the middle of the "offense" - not 8th) has a mere 5 runs scored to go with those 4 homers - Boone finally scored a run on someone else's hit for the first time in 1983 earlier in this series.  Whether that factoid reveals more about Boone's blazing footspeed or Cincinnati's fabulous clutch hitting ability remains to be seen.

Alan
