Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals
The Jays won the first two games with ease, then when the contests became much closer, found a way to lose the final two. Our record in 1-run games now stands at a very weak (and ultimately costly) 2-6.... Game 1: Steve Trout & three K.C. relievers were battered for 14 hits including 7 doubles in Toronto's 11-1 win. Lary Sorensen delivered a complete-game 5 hitter in which the only run he allowed was unearned in all respects aside from the opinion of the official scorer, but there was an even rarer event today: after 1,863 Smiley at-bats, Willie Aikens hit his first triple! It only took 1,717 AB in real life for Aikens to notch career triple #1, according to Bill James. Game 2: Toronto again used a singles-and-doubles attack to build a large lead, but even with the score 7-2 in the bottom of the 9th, the Jays managed to almost allow the tying run to come to the plate. With 2 outs and nobody on, Jim Clancy loaded the bases and George Brett (who had homered earlier) stepped in, but reliever Carlos Diaz thankfully induced a groundout. Game 3: Luis Leal's 1983 season stats have been irreparably damaged by one of HAL's more vengeful performances in a home game (see also Juan Eichelberger, CIN) so while his outing today would seem to fit right in, it actually was well below par. The Jays stranded 100% more runners than the Royals, allowing Bud Black to cruise to a 3-1 win. Brett's first inning 2-run gopher was the entire difference. Game 4: Dave Stieb was terrible, while the Jays could do nothing with Paul Splittorff - for a while. K.C. eventually blew a 4-0 lead, but was about to reclaim the advantage in the 8th when they loaded the bases with nobody out and Stieb was at long last removed. However, reliever Odell Jones got Keith Moreland to line out into a 5-4 TRIPLE PLAY*, only the second ever turned in team history. After all that drama, Jones proceeded to cough up a pair of singles and a stolen base to the first two KCA batters in the 9th, and Toronto had sealed 1-run loss #6 in 8 tries. Alan * not quite as rare as an Aikens triple, but still noteworthy. |
