Subject: same old same old for the padres
Padres continue their consistent season by being swept by the Pirates. In a series that was closer than the scores would indicate, the Pads adopt the motto of "If it weren't for bad luck, we would have no luck" game 1: a 2 out matty alou single in the 7th plates the winning run in a 2-1 pittsburgh victory. The teams traded runs in the 2nd and stayed tied until the 7th.. The Padres hard luck starter was none other than Dick Kelley. Kelley pitched 6 innings gave up one run and struck out 5 while walking none. Gary Ross got tagged with the loss. Steve Blass pitched a complete game for the victory. game 2: A 9-1 victory that was closer than the score. Pittsburgh led 2-0 going into the 6th inning. In an all too common theme, the opposition starter (luke walker in this case) had a no hitter going into the inning. The Pads managed a hit and loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Ollie Brown then lifted a ball to the deepest part of a cavernous centerfield for out #2. Fleet footed Chris Cannizaro managed to scamper home. Joe (1-19 safe) Morgan tried to advance to 3rd and of course was thrown out. THe Pirates added 2 in the bottom of the 6th and broke it open with a 2 out 4 run double off the bat of Manny Sanguillen. Sanguillen drove the ball to the wall and HAL decided to send the runner from first on a 1-10. Not only was he safe, but the ball sailed into the 3rd row of the stand and allowed Sanguillen to come completely around. THe bucs added the 9th run an inning later in true Padres fashion. A single, balk, ground out and wild pitch moved the runner around the bases. game 3: Pirates grab an early 2-0 compliments of Padres 3rd baseman Robert Pena. A two base error on the leadoff batter was followed by a ball that he made a weak attempt to get to. San Diego used 3 singles and 2 walks to tie the score (and load the bases) in the top of the 7th with one out. However Pena and Brown could not bring in the lead run. 2 hits, a wild pitch, and 2 more hits produced 2 runs inthe bottom of the 7th. Pirates fifth run again was in bizarre fashion. One on and 2 outs in the 7th and things looked contained. However Tommie Sisk developed a sudden base of Steve Blass syndrome. An hbp, walk and another hbp forced in the last run of the 5-2 bucs victory... John Robinson is rumored to be taking over the reigns of the team shortly. Management believes the teams execution is a good idea :-) On the hitting front, San Diego pitchers continue to battle the cleanup spot (and Nate Colbert in particular) for bragging rights. Currently the staff sports a .167 average with 5 doubles, while Nate is hitting .166 with 5 doubles. Ted Savage is also tied for the team lead in doubles at 5, although he only has 25 abs on the season. OVerall the #9 spot is outhitting the #4 spot .183 to .164 Mike |
