boston and kansas city split the 4 game series in fashion befitting 1999 not 1969. Boston management has asked all fans to refrain from smoking in the stadium, especially by the Red Sox bullpen, fearing an explosion of the gasoline tht Boston relievers have stored out there. game 1: Boston scores 3 in top of 4th due to backfired strategy from Kansas City. Russ Gibson was issued an intentional walk to load the bases with 2 outs. Tom Griffin then squibbed one in the hole that Paul Schaal got to,but then unwisely tried to get griffin at first. His throw was wild which permitted a 2nd run to score on the play. KC tied it in the bottom of the 6th thanks to Tony Conigliero's wild throw on a play at the plate. Lou Piniella's 2 run double in the bottom of the 8th capped a 5-3 KC win. game 2: Boston came out smoking early in this one in winning 8-2. 2 singles led to a Carl Yazstremski sac fly, then reggie smith drove one to deep center for a 3-0 lead before the fans could find their seats. THat would be all Gary Peters would need as he threw a complete game 5 hitter. Reggie Smith went 4-4 and had a chance for a 5th hit but was pulled in favor of pinch hitter Tony Conigliero, who promptedly delivered a 2 run single to ice the game in the 8th inning. game 3: An unearned run in the bottom of the first gave KC a 1-0 lead until Reggie SMith connected with another homerun to give boston a 3-1 lead. It would stay that way until the 9th when Reggie singled in 2 seemingly unnecessary runs for a 5-1 lead. However, the Boston bullpen was called upon and, as usual, made things interesting. A lead off double followed by a Bob Oliver homerun cut the lead back to two. Ray Jarvis then managed to retire the rest of the side without further damage in the 9th. game 4: This one was ugly from the start. KC scored 8(thats right 8) unearned runs in the second inning to build a 9-3 lead (reggie smith doubled in 2 more runs in the first). Boston managed to claw back to within 10-8 but the bullpen went back to work, allowing 5 8th inning runs and KC managed a 15-8 victory. At one point Boston;s line score was 4 runs 2hits and 3 errors. Only 13 of KC's 25 runs in the series were earned. IF Boston could manage to field and have the starters throw all complete games, they would be well on the way to the eastern title, instead of fighting to get out of last place. Mike |
