Game 1 Harold Baines went deep and had 2 RBI at WRIGLEY FIELD as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs 5 to 3.
Montreal jumped on top to stay in the 4th inning when they tallied 2 runs on 1 hit. The key at-bat was by Baines who quieted the home crowd when he bombed a two-run dinger (his 6th of the season). Montreal won despite being out-hit by Chicago NL 9 hits to 6.
Bill Gullickson (8-3) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Vern Ruhle got the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Chuck Rainey (3-6). He pitched 6 innings and surrendered just 3 hits and 1 walk.
Montreal now has a record of a division leading 39-21. With the loss, the Chicago NL ballclub's record is 18-42, worst in the division.
Game 2 Steve Rogers delivered 5 solid innings and first baseman Al Oliver hit 2 doubles as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago NL Cubs 3 to 2 at WRIGLEY FIELD.
Montreal drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. Chicago NL made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Rogers (9-4) allowed 1 run in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Jeff Reardon earned the save, his 16th. Steve Renko (0-3) was the loser.
Montreal now has a record of a division leading 40-21. Chicago NL has a record of 18-43, worst in the division after the loss.
Game 3 Left fielder Tim Raines went yard and had 2 RBI at WRIGLEY FIELD as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs 7 to 2.
Charlie Lea (5-5) gave Montreal a solid outing. He went 5 innings surrendering 4 hits and 1 walk improving his ERA from 4.57 to 4.26. Montreal ended up with 13 hits for the game while Chicago NL had 6.
Dick Ruthven (3-5) was given the loss. He gave up 9 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.
Game 4 The Chicago NL Cubs registered 5 runs in the 3rd inning and easily topped the Montreal Expos; the final score was 8 to 2.
Chicago NL brought 5 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Mike Witt (3-5) and Chicago NL. That was all the run support Witt required. Montreal was out-hit by Chicago NL, 12 hits to 3.
Scott Sanderson (3-1) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.
