Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers
Whatever virus this PC has that infects Cincinnati road games has unfortunately spread to Toronto: the Jays go to Texas and tighten up the pennant races in two divisions by getting SWEPT in an amazing exhibition of foul luck. Our specialty this week (aside from zero clutch hitting, blown leads galore, etc.) was the 2-base error, leading to numerous critical unearned runs and unearned losses.... Game 1: For example: the bullpen allows a late gopher ball in order to forfeit the lead, the offense strands 17 runners, and finally in the bottom of the 17th inning with 2 outs and nobody on base, a pair of walks (including Mickey Rivers reaching base on his own card vs. a left-handed pitcher - check the odds of that) are followed by a game-ending 2-base error. Final score: 4-3. Game 2: Toronto had a 5-1 lead in the 6th, but 4 errors (including back-to-back 2-basers) and 4 unearned runs later, we had a 7-6 final (and a major-league worst 5-12 record in 1-run games). Perhaps feeling charitable, Texas also committed 4 errors but theirs were only half as costly. Game 3: Toronto had a 4-1 lead in the 6th (against Nolan Ryan, no less!) when some more timely surgery turned that lead into a 7-4 defeat. The late unearned run allowed by the defense today made no difference, and Ryan was able to go the distance for his 12th win of the season. Game 4: Another day, another choke: Dave Stieb took a no-hitter into the middle frames and had a 3-0 lead in the 8th, at which point he was summoned to the operating table and dismembered. Final score: 5-3 as the efficient Texas offense plated all but 2 of the baserunners they received today. Alan |
