Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox
The choke-a-minute Jays were in typical form, but an excellent outing by Dave Stieb and one last failed choke attempt (despite a massive effort) enabled us to avoid being swept again this week.... Game 1: Stieb and CHA starter Lamarr Hoyt combined for 18 solid innings, allowing just 1 run, no walks and 17 strikeouts. Amazingly it was the Jays getting the one run, on Lloyd Moseby's clutch single in the 5th inning. Game 2: Bored with routine chokes, Toronto goes for the spectacular: Jim Clancy had a 2-1 lead in the CHA 7th with 2 outs and nobody on base. After 2 runners got aboard, lefty reliever Carlos Diaz was summoned to face lefty batters Greg Gross (.168 vs. LHP) and John Lowenstein (.000 vs. LHP). Gross singled home the tying run, the .000 hitter naturally doubled home a pair, and the Jays, defying the odds, had done it again! Game 3: The Blew Jays choked away 3 leads, one in the bottom of the 9th, one in the bottom of the 11th, then failed to score in the top of the 12th. That was unfortunate, because the run in the bottom of the 12th might have been just another blown lead rather than a blown ballgame. Final score: 5-4. Game 4: The Blew Jays choked away 4 leads, most of them two runs or more, but finally failed to forfeit a 2-run lead in the 10th. Final score: 10-8. Starters Luis Leal & Britt Burns were abused, though in Leal's case it was as much by his own putrid defense as by the CHA batters.
