July 11

The Los Angeles Dodgers edged the ice-cold St. Louis Cardinals at BUSCH
STADIUM by the score of 4 to 3.

Los Angeles erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 2
runs on 2 hits.  Larry Bowa got things going when he drew a walk.  Steve Sax
next to the plate and he laced a base-hit.  Terry Puhl then hit a deep fly
scoring a run.  Sax got a good lead and stole second.  One out later, Joe
Lefebvre stepped up to the plate and he stroked a single scoring the final
run of the inning.  St. Louis threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.

Alejandro Pena(8-5) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Pena got help
from Tom Niedenfuer who earned his 18th save.  Kevin Hagen(1-1) absorbed the
loss in relief.

Billy Vanson was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

Fernando Valenzuela had a strong outing as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated
the reeling St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 2 to 1 at BUSCH
STADIUM.

Valenzuela(7-13) had a strong outing.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 6 hits and no walks in 9 innings.  Los Angeles banged out 8 on the
night.

Dave Lapoint(4-11) was charged with the loss.  He surrendered 7 hits and 3
walks in 8 innings.  'Valenzuela took our guys to school' Mike Rescigno said.
'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'

July 13

Jerry Reuss blanked St. Louis in a very well-pitched complete game as the Los
Angeles Dodgers outscored the reeling St. Louis Cardinals 1 to
0.

Reuss(11-6) was in control of the game from the outset.  He gave up just 6
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.30.  St. Louis threatened
in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Bob Forsch(8-7) was the loser. Despite losing Mike Rescigno was optimistic
after the game.  'We'll get over this one.  Sometimes the breaks fall your
way, sometimes they don't.  Any one of a dozen little things go different,
and we come out on top.'
