Subject: Reds @ Expos
Another split, as the teams alternate victories. The Reds drew 20 walks in the series (10 in game 2 alone) which is a ton for us. Also, the error count in the four games was Montreal 7, Cincinnati 0 (which is hardly to say we were perfect on the x-plays). The Reds also left nearly 10 runners per game stranded on base. With all that, a split is a big disappointment, but the Reds couldn't win the close ones, and the "blowouts" were just overkill. Game 1: Both teams scored three in the first (as if Culver vs. Stoneman was supposed to be a pitchers duel), but the hurlers settled down after that. Nobody scored until the Reds pushed a run across in the eighth on a Ruben Amaro pinch-sac fly, but "ace" reliever Clay Carroll went triple, WP, homer in the bottom of the inning and that was that. Jack Aker allowed nothing to the Reds in the ninth. Game 2: The Reds and Don Wilson took this one 6-3, and the game was not nearly as close as the score. Montreal didn't cross the plate until after 2 were out in the ninth. Wilson got all but the final out, and also went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. He also walked only 1 while K'ing 11 Expos. Jerry Robertson gave up 8 hits and 8 walks in his 7 innings of work for Montreal. Game 3: The 'spos, behind strong pitching from Mike Wegener, win 3-2. Tony Cloninger went the route in the losing effort for the Reds. Mack Jones had 3 hits, including a homer, against his former teammates, and Jack Aker once again sealed the game for Montreal. Game 4: Jim Maloney goes to 6-0 on the season in a 10-3 laugher that *was* closer than it appeared, at least most of the way. The score was 3-2 in Cincy's favor after 6 innings. At that point Steve Hargan fell apart, and Larry Jaster couldn't pick up the pieces. Tony Perez smacked 3 homers in the game, garnering 6 RBI. Alan |
