Subject: Reds @ Pirates
Three one-run games and another that probably would have been were it not for the efforts of the Cincy Arson Squad.... Game 1: Dave Concepcion's second inning sac fly provided the only scoring of the contest, as both Milt Wilcox and Jose Deleon were very effective on the mound. Deleon's lack of support was highly reminiscent of his real-life rookie season, but the Reds almost turned his loss into a win when the Cincy manager idiotically called for the bullpen despite Wilcox's 8 shutout innings. Naturally there was trouble in the form of two immediate hits, but disaster was narrowly averted when Ted Power induced Steve Garvey to hit into a game-ending DP. Game 2: Another 1-0 contest that was scoreless until the bottom of the 9th, when so many CIN road games are decided. Power wasn't able to get the job done this time, and Bert Blyleven wound up with a 5-hit shutout. Juan Eichelberger can't catch a break even on the rare occasions when he pitches well, like today when he tossed 5.2 shutout innings. Game 3: The Reds blew an early 4-1 lead, but came back against Kent Tekulve in the 9th to tie the game at 7 and send it into extras. With the usual relievers fatigued (a happy event for the Reds), Bruce Berenyi and Milt Wilcox combined to win and save the game respectively when Tony Perez delivered a sac fly in the 11th after the Reds had stranded 8 runners in scoring position. Game 4: Frank Pastore wasn't impressive (except at the plate where he rapped another home run) although he matched Larry McWilliams for 6 innings. But in the PIN 8th, Jeff Russell gassed it up and walked the bases loaded so as to allow a Grand Slam to Marvelle Wynne - a player who even after that fortunate dice roll still has fewer home runs (2) than Pastore (3) this season. Cincy had to strand 7 more runners in scoring position in order to avoid making a contest of it. Alan |
