Subject: *** RESULTS *** Dodgers @ Padres

with the new look Dodgers coming into town next week, here's the final results from the 1983 opening day Dodgers as we knew and loved.

July 27

Atlee Hammaker had a strong outing as the San Diego Padres defeated the Los
Angeles Dodgers by a score of 2 to 0 at San Diego Stadium.

In the 2nd inning San Diego scored 2 runs.  That early run support was enough
for Hammaker(10-3) and San Diego.  After the 2nd inning, neither team was
able to score.

Hammaker got help from Ron Reed who earned his 5th save. Alejandro Pena(9-6)
was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Neal Heaton was on top of his game, blanking Los Angelehits as the
San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 2 to 0 at San Diego
Stadium.

Heaton(6-2) was on top of his game.  He gave up just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings lowering his ERA to 2.78.  Neither team managed to score after the
1st inning.

Bob Welch(7-10) suffered the loss.  He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 4
hits and 6 walks. Heaton was obviously very pleased with his performance in
the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one of those games where everything
worked.  My arm felt great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three
innings.  I only hope that I can do it again next time out!'

In a close game it was the Los Angeles Dodgers 5, the San Diego Padres 3 at
San Diego Stadium.

Los Angeles had 3 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 3
hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Greg Brock who deflated the
spirits of the home town crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 14th of
the season).  The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th
inning.

Mike Torrez(9-12) went 6 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Torrez got relief
help from Tom Niedenfuer who gained credit for his 22nd save.  Tim
Lollar(8-5) was the losing pitcher.  He struck out 8 batters in 5 and 1/3
innings despite losing the game.

Los Angeles now has a record of 62-55. With the loss, the San Diego ballclub's
record is 54-63.
