Game 1 Mike Squires had 2 base hits and scored 3 times as the San Diego Padres defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 6 to 1 at San Diego Stadium.
San Diego took the lead off Eric Rasmussen in the first inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Alan Wiggins opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Wiggins was safe at second on a stolen base. Two outs later Rick Monday stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Terry Kennedy came up and he stroked a single knocking in a run. Graig Nettles came to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases. Juan Bonilla added his contribution to the rally and slapped a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. That early run support was enough for Eric Show (7-10) and San Diego . Montreal was out-hit by San Diego , 11 hits to 3.
Rasmussen (2-1) took the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings.
Game 2 The Montreal Expos defeated the San Diego Padres by a score of 4 to 1 at San Diego Stadium.
Montreal jumped on top of San Diego in the top of the 6th inning scoring one runner using 2 hits. Montreal managed 8 hits in their victory.
Bill Gullickson (15-5) went 7 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Jeff Reardon was credited with his 33rd save. Atlee Hammaker (11-4) suffered the loss. He allowed just 2 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings.
Game 3 The Montreal Expos easily topped the San Diego Padres; the final score was 8 to 2.
Andre Dawson was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 15th of the season) in the 6th inning and tripled in the 8th inning. Montreal had 12 hits overall, while San Diego had 8.
The victory went to Steve Rogers (21-7) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Tim Lollar (8-6) was tagged with the loss. With this win, Montreal has a division leading 85-40 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With this loss, San Diego has a 5-5 record of late, 59-66 overall.
Game 4
Tim Raines had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres by a score of 4 to 2.
Montreal tallied 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning with the help of 3 hits. They would hold up as the winning runs. Montreal totaled 9 hits on the afternoon.
Charlie Lea (12-7) was the winner allowing 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings. Lea got relief help from Jeff Reardon who gained credit for his 34th save. Dave Dravecky (7-13) was hit with the loss. |
