Subject: Reds @ Cubs
Wuth the luck the Reds have, every opponent may as well be the 1927 Yankees. And that includes the 1983 Cubs, as the Reds unpleasantly found out in this series.... Game 1: Massive overachiever Dennis Eckersley met Milt "Gopher Machine" Wilcox, and the outcome was exactly as expected. Wilcox coughed up three more gophers (Ruth, Gehrig & Lazzeri, if I recall correctly) and lost by the score of 4-2 after blowing a 2-0 lead. Game 2: After the Reds battled back to tie the score 3-3 in the 7th, reliever Scott Holman allowed a 2-out home run in the CHN 8th to lose it. Final score: 4-3. Game 3: Another day, another choke: 3 late unanswered runs (2 on gopher balls off the Cincy bullpen) erase a lead. Final score: 4-2. Cub pitchers Ruthven & Brusstar scattered 7 weak singles, walked 1 and fanned 11 helpless Cincy batters. Game 4: The Reds manage zero clutch hits and just 1 unearned run off of Tommy John, and Cincy starter Mario Soto pitches just poorly enough to avoid winning, as usual. Final score: 3-1. Alan |
