Subject: Reds @ Padres
The Reds should be playing only for draft position, and only in that sense was this a successful series. But it took two of our Patented Late Inning Chokes and one typically luckless Mario Soto outing to accomplish it.... Game 1: The only contest where we failed to succeed at failure, Joe Price and the unexpectedly effective Cincinnati bullpen took a 3-0 shutout into the bottom of the ninth and coughed up only 1 run. Von Hayes returned to the lineup after his nearly season-long demotion, and Pete Rose made his Reds' re-debut as a pinch hitter. Game 2: What Bruce Berenyi and the Cincy offense worked 8 innings to build (a meager 2-0 lead) was forfeited in 8 seconds. Relievers Ted Power & Bill Scherrer combined to face 3 batters, retiring zero of them, and instantly turned that 2-0 advantage into a 4-2 defeat. Berenyi had walked 8 batters, but took a 1-hitter into the bottom of the 8th, at which point the roof caved in. Game 3: Today the Cincy offense built a 4-0 lead after half an inning; we were trailing going into the top of the second. Cincy choked on our final lead of the day in the bottom of the 9th and sealed the defeat in the 11th. Not many teams can score 13 runs and still find a way to lose; final score: 15-13. Three critical unearned runs were graciously provided by 2 Pete Rose errors. Game 4: For almost the entire contest, the Reds stranded any runner who wasn't gunned down on the basepaths; in the 9th inning we finally generated just enough runs to lose. Final score: 4-3, as Soto was victimized by several surgical rolls & splits in the early frames, before settling down and turning the would-be disastrous outing into one that was merely well below average.
