Subject: Blue Jays @ Orioles
The Jays may be strangers to pennant races, but we're no strangers to chokes. And we were doing exactly that for 26 innings in this series before turning it around and salvaging a split by the skin of our teeth.... Game 1: An early 4-1 lead dissolved when Lary Sorensen fell apart in the middle innings and the TOA batters couldn't purchase a clutch hit. Final score: 7-5. Eddie Murray walloped a pair of gophers to lead the comeback. Jon Matlack was pretty solid after the second inning for the O's, and their bullpen allowed zilch. Game 2: Luis Leal was subjected to some of the most precise surgery of the season, allowing 5 first innings runs on the way to a 7-3 loss. HAL could afford to let up on Leal after the 1st, what with the patient already being dead. Scott McGregor navigated the Jays' righty lineup with ease until hitting a very small speed bump in the 9th. Game 3: Lloyd Moseby's home run erased Baltimore's 2-0 lead in the 6th, but Toronto wasted little time in giving it back, and more. The Orioles extended the lead to 5-3 when Darrell Porter homered lead off the 8th against reliever Odell Jones, but for once it was our opponent's bullpen - or rather, their defense - failing to hold the lead. Moseby's sac fly in the TOA 9th cut the lead to one run and a throwing error by George Vukovich followed up with a botched grounder by Eddie Murray gave the visitors one unearned run and a surprising 6-5 win. Game 4: Only an idiot would choose a critical game in a tight pennant race to have Doyle Alexander (with *that* card) make his season debut, but that's what the Jays did - and somehow got away with it. Staked to a 1-0 lead after half an inning, Alexander naturally allowed a gopher to the first batter he faced in 1983. But he eventually retired 15 batters without allowing another run (!). The Jays stranded (or lost via GIDP) most of our 18 baserunners, but eventually plated 6 and the bullpen contributed 4 scoreless innings to register the series split and keep the Jays alive in the A.L. East race. Alan |
