Subject: Blue Jays @ Brewers

The much-anticipated showdown between the teams who came into the week all tied up.   What's the difference between still being all tied up or having a 4 game lead?  Bullpen chokes and lots of stranded runners....

Game 1: The one rout of the series, with Toronto slamming 4 home runs and Lary Sorensen taking a 13-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.  We tried, but eventually decided to save the chokes for another day (or two).  Final score: 13-5.  Sorensen wasn't pitching all that well even before the 9th, but he didn't need to.  Floyd Bannister & Jerry Augustine allowed most of TOA's 17 hits and 33 total bases.

Game 2: MLA got a pair in the first off of Mark Davis, but the Jays batters rang up a lot of hits again today and came back immediately to take a 5-2 lead.  That wasn't nearly large enough of a lead to avert disaster, Jim Acker doing the honors today with a 2-run "Perfect Sambito" in the Milwaukee 5th that erased the lead for good.  Toronto got 3 hits, a walk and a wild pitch in the 9th, cutting our deficit to 8-7 before having the tying (80%) baserunner nailed at the plate.

Game 3: Wasting opportunities all game long (Stat of the Day - LOB: TOA - 11, MLA - 2) the Jays finally battled back to tie the contest 4-4 in the 8th.  So naturally Dave Stieb promptly issued 3 walks to load the bases with 2 outs, and just as naturally the next two relievers combined to walk in the losing run and then clear the bases with back-to-back doubles.  Final score: 9-4.  The Reds may do this sort of thing more often, but they can't do it any more effectively.

Game 4: Willie Upshaw's home run capped a 3-run first for the visitors; Ted Simmons' 2-out blast after an error and a walk capped a 3-unearned-run first for the home team.  Finally, the Jays were the beneficiaries (rather than the victims) of some surgery, scoring 6 times in the 5th to take a 9-3 lead.  And almost managed to blow it entirely; final score: 10-8.  Odell Jones bailed out starter Luis Leal (who was fairly solid) and reliever Bud Anderson (who was awful), earning his 16th save while preserving Leal's 16th victory.
