Game 1 The incredible Montreal Expos toppled the slumping St. Louis Cardinals by a 8 to 4 score at BUSCH STADIUM.
Charlie Lea (14-8) had a steady outing. He went 7 and 1/3 innings surrendering 9 hits and 5 walks. Montreal won despite being out-hit by St. Louis 11 hits to 7.
Bob Forsch (10-10) suffered the loss. He gave up 4 runs in 3 innings of work.
Game 2 In a lop-sided win the Montreal Expos ripped the slumping St. Louis Cardinals by a 6 to 1 count.
Montreal erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning with 2 runs. After an out was recorded, Tony Bernazard started the attack as he drew a walk. Mike Schmidt came next and he cracked a two-run shot (his 38th of the season). Montreal finished with 10 hits in the victory.
The victory went to Eric Rasmussen (4-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run. Jeff Reardon recorded his 38th save. Joaquin Andujar (10-13) was charged with the loss.
Game 3 It was a great finish at BUSCH STADIUM as the St. Louis Cardinals pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Montreal Expos by the count of 4 to 3.
St. Louis erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After two outs Willie McGee opened up the rally as he slapped a one-base hit. Glenn Brummer came next and he drew a walk. Lonnie Smith then drew a walk to load the bases. Mike Ramsey followed and he tripled resulting in a mighty exciting win for St. Louis and the 16,041 home town fans in attendance. Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.
The win was credited to John Martin (4-5) who went 1 inning allowing 1 run. Jeff Reardon (3-6) was charged with the loss in relief
Game 4 Right fielder Harold Baines launched 2 homeruns as the incredible Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 4 to 1 at BUSCH STADIUM.
Baines enjoyed a big day at the plate. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 2nd inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 15th of the season) in the 4th inning and slapped a single in the 5th inning. St. Louis was out-hit by Montreal , 9 hits to 5.
The victory was credited to Steve Rogers (25-7) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Rogers got help from Bryn Smith who was credited with his 4th save. Danny Cox (3-4) took the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
Montreal now has a record of a division leading 99-51. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, St. Louis is 1-9 of late and now has an overall record of 63-87. |
