Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers
The Jays visit the Tigers to end the 1983 season. Would we: a. take full advantage of our somewhat usage-depleted opponent? b. choke up the nails that would finally seal our 1983 coffin? c. something in between, leaving our fate in other teams' hands? The answer is.... Game 1: Toronto played Strand-O-Matic for 8 innings (LOB - TOA: 12, DEA: 4) but broke the 1-1 tie in the 9th. Final score: 4-1. Luis Leal had an excellent start, Jim Gott tossed 2 innings of perfect relief, and leadoff hitter Ron Washington went 5 for 5 and drove in the game-winning run. Juan Berenguer had a solid start for Detroit, but reliever Dave Gumpert allowed 6 singles in the TOA 9th, sandwiched around a GIDP. Game 2: DEA starter Ken Forsch was lifted for usage reasons after 5 PERFECT innings, replaced by Gumpert, who did not let the hometown fans down this time. The mighty Toronto offense mustered 2 singles and zero walks in 9 innings, giving Jim Clancy no support whatsoever. Final score: 4-0. Gott put up 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in the lost cause. Tom Paciorek was the offensive hero for the Tigers, reaching base all 4 times and missing out on the cycle by only a triple. Game 3: Speaking of triples: Toronto's final road win of 1983 featured three of them (Washington, Herndon & Fernandez), plus a superfluous home run by Damaso Garcia. The Jays tallied 7 times in the final two frames of a formerly-close game to prevail by the score of 11-2, giving starter Lenny Barker a month's worth of support. Barker went the route, scattering 5 hits and walking only 1. Game 4: In a fitting end to the season, the Jays got the hits (11-6 advantage there) but Detroit got the runs, including two fatal unearned runs. Larry Herndon's blown-x double was compounded nicely by his throwing error, giving Detroit (and Milwaukee) their early Christmas presents and probably costing Dave Stieb the Cy Young award in the process. Down 3-0, the Jays cut the lead to 3-1 in the 7th and 3-2 in the 9th. The tying run was then extinguished by Lloyd Moseby's GIDP, enabling the Jays to sink to 17-22 in 1-run contests. Alan |
