Subject: Reds @ Braves
After 154 games, the Reds finally learn that: 1. We might have won 90 games if Tom Hume had been our closer all along, and 2. We just needed to face more All-Star pitchers in order to be successful, as we roughed up John Denny in his *two* starts during this series. Game 1: Cincy crammed all of our offense into one inning, taking an early 6-0 lead against the N.L. ERA leader, then choking away just under 100% of the lead. Final score: 6-5. Rick Behenna and Bruce Kison combined for 7 innings of near-flawless relief for Atlanta, while 3 Cincy pitchers tried valiantly to blow the massive lead. Game 2: As in his previous road start, Scott Holman's solid card was of little use to him, as HAL's precision rolling found nothing but hits there. Craig McMurtry made the Braves' early lead hold up, despite allowing 10 hits while his side only got 7. Final score: 5-3. Dale Murphy had 3 hits, 4 RBI, and notched home run #46. Game 3: After his early shower in game 1, Denny gave it another try today and fared little better. Duplicating exactly our game one arson attempt, the Reds sprinted out to a 6-0 lead and then allowed the next 5 runs. But Tom Hume and Ted Power restored order and Cincy pulled away for a 10-5 win. Cincinnati shortstop Tom Foley *finally* got some hits in his well-populated 2 column, after going 0-for-1983 there in road games, registering a 4-for-4 performance today with 3 RBI. Game 4: The Reds used 29 players and needed almost every one of them in order to lose today's contest. With the score 1-1 after 2 innings, neither team crossed the plate again (and the Reds never did) until HAL took one final opportunity to perform his special surgery on the 1983 Reds. Cincy's first 5 relievers out of the pen allowed nothing today, but when the "real" closers arrived in the ATN 8th, it was time for the scalpel. Seven runs later - six of them unearned - the final score was 8-1 and Cincy's 1983 season was mercifully dead at last. Alan |
