Subject: Milwaukee @ Baltimore

The Brewers much like the real life 1982 Brewers went to Baltimore to finish the series needing in this case two wins to take the division, and one game to force a one game playoff between Toronto and Milwaukee .  This was by far the most nerve racking series I’ve played in some time.

Game 1

Floyd Bannister went up against Mike Boddicker for the O’s.  The O’s got on top early by scoring two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, thanks to a double by Bob Watson.  The Brewers answered back in the top of the 3rd as Randy Ready’s run scoring triple moved the Brewers within a run.  Boddicker however would not let the Brewers get any closer, as he allowed seven hits over 7 1/3 innings, while Bannister also held the O’s in check.  Al Holland came in for the O’s to close it out, and in the 9th the Brewers had a two runners on but Holland got Cecil Cooper to fly out to end the game, the O’s win 2-1.

Game 2

Paul Molitor set the tone for the Brewers early, by leading off the game with a homer off Scott McGregor, to give the momentum to the Crew, and two more baserunners would reach in the first to give Mark Brouhard the chance to be a hero, he delivered with a three run homer to give the Brewers a 4-0 lead in the first.  This was all Don Sutton would need, pitching only into the 5th due to usage issues, he allowed only one hit to the O’s.  The Brewers would tack on five more runs on McGregor and Jamie Easterly, as they rolled to a 9-3 victory capturing a tie for first place.

Game 3

Fergie Jenkins went up against Storm Davis, and this was a one for the ages.  The teams couldn’t score for the first five innings, but the Brewers scored first in the sixth, thanks to a double by Cooper scoring Jose Cruz with an unearned run.  The Brewers bullpen needed to pick up a lot of innings again, as Jenkins was limited for innings today.  Jerry Augustine and Bill Campbell held the O’s at bay for two innings, and the Brewers lead 1-0.  In the bottom of the 8th, George Frazier came in for the Crew, pinch hitter Dan Ford took Frazier deep to tie the score at one.  Then, thanks to poor defense, the Brewers committed two errors allowing the O’s to score the go ahead run giving the O’s the 2-1 lead.  In the top of the 9th, the Brewers had the first two guys reach on walks, and Robin Yount’s hit and run double scored both runners giving the Brewers the 3-2 lead.   They couldn’t score any more and that would be costly.  In the bottom of the 9th, Steve Howe walked Gary Roenicke with one out, then got a second fly out to bring the Brewers to the top step of the dugout anticipating a division clinching victory.  Leo Hernandez was called on to pinch hit for Dan Ford, he rolled a 4-4, allowing a homer 1-6, otherwise a flyout…Hernandez pulled a two, and that resulted in a two run homer, giving the O’s the victory, 4-3.  A crushing loss for the Brewers who walked off the field stunned.

Game 4

All hands on deck for the Brewers who sent Tom Candiotti to the mound against Dennis Martinez, and the Brewers scored first, after two singles, Ted Simmons delivered a sac fly to give the Brewers the 1-0 lead.  It would remain that way until the fifth, when Jim Gantner hit a long fly off Martinez to give the Brewers the 2-0 lead.  Candiotti allowed six hits through six innings, but did an incredible job of stranding runners.  George Frazier was called on to pitch the 7th and 8th innings, and he did a great job allowing only one walk.  The Brewers in the 9th, got a walk, and then two more singles as Ted Simmons knocked in another run giving the Brewers the 3-0 lead.  They turned it over to Steve Howe again, and he responded by giving up a lead off single to Bob Watson.  Brewers fans began heading for the highest bridge once Watson reached first base.  However, Doug Decinces then bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to get the Brewers within one out of the division crown, Gary Roenicke stepped up, and flew out to end the game, sending the Brewers to October baseball and the fans into a frenzy, 3-0.

The Brewers finished one game ahead of the Blue Jays to take the AL East for the first time under GM Simons tenure.
