Subject: Twins take three of four in the capital as former Vice President Humphrey watches
Former Vice President Humphrey(soon to be Senator from Minnesota) was in town for a four game series between his beloved Twins and the Senators of his political nemesis from Minnesota, Bob Short. Humphrey and Short had battled for control of the Democratic party in Minnesota and Humphrey won. Now he wanted to see his team win some ball games at RFK. And they did win, three out of four. This despite losing the second game of the four game series 16-1 on a cold and rainy night in the District. Game One: The Twins sent rising star Jim Perry (7-0) to the mound to face the Senator's Joe Coleman (2-4). Perry gave up only seven hits over eight innings - one being a homerun to Mike Epstein to open up the ninth. The Twins got one run in the first, two runs in the third, and runs in the seventh and ninth to take this one 5-1. Harmon Killebrew led the way with three RBI and his 15th homer of the year. Rod Carew was 2 for 4 and Cesar Tovar was 3 for 5 as each of them scored 2 runs apiece. The Twins stole six bases, the most they have stolen in one game in a very long time. They were led by Tovar who stole three alone. One Tovar steal was of third base on a double steal that involved Killebrew stealing second. Carew stole two bases as well. Carew failed to bunt the run home from third for the first time this year in the early innings. Game Two: The Senators exploded for 16 runs off of Dave Boswell (4-5), Tom Hall, and Dick Woodson. Boswell, who has been steady for the Twins thus far, clearly had an off night as he gave up 6 runs and 8 hits in only 3&2/3 innings of work. Meanwhile, Tom Hall continued to struggle and serve up watermelons as he gave up 8 runs in the seventh (only 2 were earned) including a three run homer to reserve Chico Salmon. The Twins fell apart defensively too making three errors in the seventh and eighth innings. The Senators were led by Chico Salmon who went 3 for 5 with 6 RBI and 2 homers. They were his first two homers of the year. Strangely enough, the Senators scored 16 runs in a game that saw all-star slugger Frank Howard go 0-4. Pitcher Grant Jackson (5-3) pitched a complete game for the Senators, giving up a solo homer to Killebrew his 16th. Game Three: The Twins Larry Dierker (6-4) shut out the Senators and Dick Bosman(2-4) 7-0. Rod Carew was the hitting star going 5 for 5 with 3 RBI, a triple, and a stolen base. Carew scored three runs as did lead off hitter Ted Uhlaender. Uhlaender was 3 for 5 as was Rich Reese. Uhlaender stole 2 bases and Cesar Tovar continued his hot running stealing yet another base off of the Senators back stops. Tony Oliva had 2 RBI. Game Four: In 1965, Bobby Allison starred in the world series against the Dodgers. In 1969, he is a role player, seeing limited action. Well... here in the twilight of his career, he hit a giant blast over the center field wall for an eighth inning grand slam to put the Twins up 6-1. Darold Knowles was pitching in relief for the Senators at the time. The Twins would add a run in the ninth and take the last game of the series 7-1. Back up Rick Renick got the start at third base and hit a 2 run homer in the fifth. Starter Rudy May (4-7) took the loss for the Senators, despite giving up only 5 hits and 2 runs through 7 innings pitched. Jim Kaat (5-1) pitched 6&1/3 innings of solid ball for the win. |
