Subject: Opening Day report from Baltimore
Some new players for the Minnesota Twins made an immediate impact leaving Twins fans hopeful for the future.
Rick Sutcliffe started his first game as a Twin and looked a bit shaky coming out of the gates. Jeff Stone singled and stole sedond to lead off the game. Sutcliffe got the nest 2 batters via strikeout, but Cal Ripken got a 2 out rbi single to give the O's a 1-0 lead. Tom Brunansky evened it up quickly with a solo home run in the 2nd inning. The Twins got a run on a wild pitch in the 3rd and then Bruno singled home another run giving the Twins a 3-1 lead. Bobby Grich led off the 4th with a home run to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Orioles would get no closer as Sutcliffe settled into a groove. The Twins took the slim lead to the 8th, when they quickly loaded the bases thanks to some wildness from Scott McGregor, allowing a leadoff single to rookie Kirby Puckett and then walking Andre Thornton and Brunansky to load them up. Mickey Hatcher doubled in 2 runners and Tim Teufel singled home another to give the Twins a 6-2 lead. Puckett tripled and scored in the
9th to give the Twins a healthy 7-2 lead.
Healthy? This coming from a team who has Ron Davis closing things out? Ed Hodge got Eddie Murray out but then gave up doubles to Cal Ripken and Bobby Grich. Decinces singled home Grich to cut it to 7-4. Enter the pyro, Ron Davis. He walks the first 2 batters he faces to put the tying run on 1st and the winning run at the plate. Alas, the odds came to Ron's rescue and he struck out Darrell Porter and got Jeff Stone to ground out to end it. This is a very good Baltimore team and the Twins were feeling fortunate to come here and win in their yard.
The young centerfielder, Puckett, looking a bit like a fire hydrant, went 3-4 with a triple and a sac bunt and scored 3 runs. He can play.
