Subject: Reds @ Braves
Either team could have won all 4 games, so it seems fitting (yet miraculous) that the Reds were actually able to achieve a split.... Game 2: The Reds blew leads of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 5-3 by allowing the Braves to always score immediately after we did - except for the last time in the 12th inning. Reds reverse the outcome of game one and win 6-5 in 12. The Reds racked up a pair of blown saves and 14 LOB (matching Atlanta's LOB total), but Ted Power tossed 3 scoreless frames to get the win. Bob Boone's suicide squeeze plated the deciding run. Game 3: The Cincy offense was not the problem in this series; it was the atrocious pitching. Mario Soto was unfortunately far worse than his card (what a surprise) and the offense got a late start today, allowing Joe Niekro to take a 4-0 shutout into the 8th. At which point a few singles combined with some ATN wildness to give the visitors a sudden 5-4 lead. But CIN reliever Phil Niekro allowed a game-losing 3-run homer to powerful slugger Marc Hill mere seconds after we took the lead, and the Braves put up a 4-spot which negated our unlikely comeback, and more. Final score: 8-5, another late-inning loss. Game 4: Jay Tibbs made his Smiley debut a successful one, but only by accident. Tibbs walked nobody in his 7.1 innings of work, but that was only because the Atlanta batters were so busy teeing off on his fat pitches. Tibbs allowed 13 hits (and they were hardly all singles) but dodged most of the bullets and held on, with help from John Franco, for a 4-2 victory. Rick Mahler, after a year off, took the loss for the Braves although he pitched fairly well. Alan |
