Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers
The Blew Jays open 1984 in the same underachieving fashion that we closed 1983, playing choke-a-minute, break-free baseball until the series was almost 100% complete (and we didn't even face Nolan Ryan).... Game 1: Texas lefty Mike Mason was near-perfect most of the day, while the Rangers batters surgically dismembered TOA starter Jim Clancy. The Rangers dented the scoreboard first when catcher Marvis Foley hit a solo homer in the second, and it was understandably all downhill from there. Final score: 6-2, as Toronto was held to just 5 hits by Mason and reliever Dave Schmidt. Game 2: Pete O'Brien smacked a couple of gophers off of Luis Leal and reliever Brent Gaff became an official Blew Jay by allowing 4 baserunners and 2 runs in his one inning of relief work; those turned out to be very important runs. Final score: 6-4. Game 3: And on it goes: today the offense showed up from the start, giving Dave Stieb a 5-1 lead, which was precisely enough for him to choke into a 6-5 defeat (helped by an unearned run although we committed zero errors). Game 4: When just a run or two would have made a difference in previous games, today Toronto piles it on needlessly (though hardly intentionally) and wins by 6. Final score: 7-1. Cliff Johnson had nearly as many hits (4) as the entire TEA offense (5) and plated 4 runners while he was at it. Jim Gott went the distance, allowing 4 singles, a double & 4 walks. The game was uncomfortably close and seemed headed for another late-inning disaster until the Jays opened up some breathing room in the final two innings. Alan |
