Subject: Week 8 begins

The Week 8 files are posted. We are playing days 50 to 56, and results &
Week 9 CMs are due by 8 AM next Sunday.

The only real close race is in the N.L. East, where the Mets & Cards don't
seem to be able to lose each other, but races in two other divisions may be
closer than they look:

"Are they really that good?": The Minnesota Twins are 12-0 against the
Seattle Pilots so far in 1969, and a still-respectable (but not quite so
awesome) 23-14 otherwise. The San Francisco Giants are a combined 17-1
against the two N.L. expansion teams, but only 16-15 in other games.

"Are they really that bad?": Though they may lack the talent of the
established teams, the expansion teams might be able to make up some ground
through good luck. Or not. The Kansas City Royals are an incredible 1-12
in 1-run games (the "luck" games), and the San Diego Padres are only
slightly better at 3-13 in those games.

"The Dick Kelley Award": ...to the unlikely player who happens to be
playing way over his head goes this week to KC's Paul Schaal. Schaal had a
*slugging percentage* of barely .300 in 1969, but in SMILEY is second in the
A.L. in batting average at .341, had a league-high 24-game hitting streak
earlier, and is 2nd in the majors in OBP at .444.

Unfortunately for Mr. Schaal, though the 1969 season is not quite one-third
over, Schaal's season is already more than half done (he gets only 265 PA,
after inflation).

On the pitching side, Bob Gibson and Denny McLain have dominated most
categories for over a year, but now it's Sam McDowell's turn. McDowell
currently leads the majors in wins (9), ERA (1.57), and trails Mickey Lolich
by only 5 in the strikeout department (the third component of the pitching
Triple Crown). McDowell's only 1 behind Ferguson Jenkins for the N.L. lead
in strikeouts.

Alan
