Subject: Double no-hitter for 9 innings
In the most amazing game I have ever played in almost 30 years of playing Strat, Jose Munoz of the Reds and Ed Willett of the Cardinals both pitched no-hitters thru 9 innings. In fact, Willett had a perfect game until walking Mickey Doolan to lead off the 9th. Munoz only baserunners were walks to Miller Huggins in the 2nd and the 7th innings. There were about 4 split chances for the Reds of 50% or better for hits (and several others under 50%) and 1 for the Cardinals, but the split cards kept coming up on the high end. Nux James finally got the first hit of the game to lead off the 10th, and after a flyout by Pete Hill, a one base error put runners on 1st and 2nd for Fred Merkle. But a tailor-made double play ended the first Reds threat of the game. After getting the leadoff batter in the 10th, Munoz finally lost his no-hitter when Jimmy Sheckard knocked a clean hit to center who was then erased on a double play as well. Heinie Zimmerman led off the Reds half of the 11th when the 2nd hit of Willett and advanced to 2nd on a ground out. Peaches Graham then lased a single to centerfield and Zimmerman came around to score the games first run when Cy Seymour threw the ball away. A strikeout and groundout ended any further rally. The Cardinals wouldn't go down without a fight though as Harry Steinfeldt hit a tough liner to left field that Pete Hill misplayed into a 2 base error. After Harry Davis popped out, pinch hitter Eddie Hohnhorst singled Steinfeldt to 3rd. Luis Bustamente then hit for Willett and lined out but Doc Gessler kept St. Louis alive by walking to load the bases. That was enough for Munoz and Addie Joss was brought in to close out the game. Miller Hullins flied out to end this unbelievable game. The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. Cincinnati ended up winning it in the 11th inning. Heinie Zimmerman slapped a single. After an out was recorded, Peaches Graham stepped in and he singled, and an error was also committed, scoring the run. Cincinnati had only 3 hits for the game. Munoz(4-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 10 and 2/3 innings. The right-handed Munoz had his no-hit bid broken up by Jimmy Sheckard who singled with one out in the 10th inning. Addie Joss earned the save, his 3rd. Ed Willett(2-2) was charged with the loss. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. *** TOP OF INNING 1 *** 0 R.Oldring 4 Strike Out b-0 1 N.James 5 Ground Out b-0 2 P.Hill 1 Pop Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 1 *** 0 D.Gessler 2 Ground Out b-0 1 M.Huggins 4 Walk b-1 1 1 C.Seymour 2 Fly Out b-0 2 1 J.Sheckard 5 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 2 *** 0 V.Campbell 1 Ground Out b-0 1 F.Merkle 3 Pop Out b-0 2 H.Zimmerman 5 Ground Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 2 *** 0 J.Barry 2 Ground Out b-0 1 H.Steinfeldt 2 Line Out b-0 2 H.Davis 3 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 3 *** 0 M.Doolan 3 Ground Out b-0 1 B.Pierce 1 Fly Out b-0 2 J.Munoz 3 Strike Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 3 *** 0 G.Gonzalez 5 Line Out b-0 1 E.Willett 3 Pop Out b-0 2 D.Gessler 4 Strike Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 4 *** 0 R.Oldring 2 Pop Out b-0 1 N.James 1 Fly Out b-0 2 P.Hill 1 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 4 *** 0 M.Huggins 1 Ground Out b-0 1 C.Seymour 2 Ground Out b-0 2 J.Sheckard 3 Strike Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 5 *** 0 V.Campbell 1 Fly Out b-0 1 F.Merkle 5 Fly Out b-0 2 H.Zimmerman 3 Pop Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 5 *** 0 J.Barry 6 Fly Out b-0 1 H.Steinfeldt 1 Fly Out b-0 2 H.Davis 3 Strike Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 6 *** 0 M.Doolan 3 Fly Out b-0 1 B.Pierce 3 Ground Out b-0 2 J.Munoz 6 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 6 *** 0 G.Gonzalez 5 Ground Out b-0 1 E.Willett 2 Ground Out b-0 2 D.Gessler 3 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 7 *** 0 R.Oldring 3 Ground Out b-0 1 N.James 3 Fly Out b-0 2 P.Hill 3 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 7 *** 0 M.Huggins 4 Walk b-1 0 1 C.Seymour 3 Sac Bunt 1-2 b-0 1 2 J.Sheckard 1 Ground Out 2-3 b-0 2 3 J.Barry 5 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 8 *** 0 V.Campbell 3 Line Out b-0 1 F.Merkle 3 Ground Out b-0 2 H.Zimmerman 3 Pop Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 8 *** 0 H.Steinfeldt 5 Line Out b-0 1 H.Davis 4 Strike Out b-0 2 G.Gonzalez 3 Ground Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 9 *** 0 M.Doolan 6 Walk b-1 SUBSTITUTE PH- Peaches Graham 0 1 P.Graham 5 Fly Out b-0 1 1 J.Munoz 3 Force Play 1-o b-1 2 1 R.Oldring 3 Fly Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 9 *** SUBSTITUTE C - Peaches Graham 0 E.Willett 6 Strike Out b-0 1 D.Gessler 3 Strike Out b-0 2 M.Huggins 6 Pop Out b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 10 *** 0 N.James 6 Single b-1 0 1 P.Hill 3 Fly Out b-0 1 1 V.Campbell 4 1 Base Error - 2B 1-2 b-1 1 12 F.Merkle 3 Ground Out Double Play 1-o b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 10 *** 0 C.Seymour 3 Pop Out b-0 1 J.Sheckard 1 Single b-1 1 1 J.Barry 5 Ground Out Double Play 1-o b-0 [1]*** TOP OF INNING 11 *** 0 H.Zimmerman 3 Single b-1 0 1 M.Doolan 3 Ground Out 1-2 b-0 1 2 P.Graham 3 Single & Error - CF 2-H b-3 1 3 J.Munoz 4 Strike Out b-0 2 3 R.Oldring 4 Ground Out b-0 [1]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 11 *** 0 H.Steinfeldt 5 2 Base Error - LF b-2 0 2 H.Davis 5 Pop Out b-0 SUBSTITUTE PH- Eddie Hohnhorst 1 2 E.Hohnhorst 2 Single 2-3 b-1 SUBSTITUTE PH- Luis Bustamente 1 1 3 L.Bustamente 3 Line Out b-0 2 1 3 D.Gessler 4 Walk 1-2 b-1 SUBSTITUTE P - Addie Joss 2 123 M.Huggins 5 Fly Out b-0
