The Twins incredible luck rolls on as they take 3 of 4 in Motown. Game One: The Tiger's Denny McClain inspired rookie Dick Woodson to a pitcher's duel. Through 5 innings the Twins led 1-0 on Tony Oliva's fourth inning double that scored Rod Carew. In the sixth, Woodson got into trouble as the bases were loaded, Norm Cash grounded out to send a run home. The Twins went ahead in the seventh as Leo Cardenas, and John Roseboro singled. With two out, infielder Paul Popovich hit for reliever Tom Hall (2-1), and sibled home what would be the game winning run. So McClain (4-7) went seven innings, gave up four hits and two runs and took the tough loss. He had a double in the third to help his on cause only to be LOB. The Twins sent closer Perranoski to the mound for the eighth and ninth to face the heart of the Detriot lineup. He shut them down without a hit to earn his 12th save. Twins 2-1. Game Two: The Twins sent ace Jim Perry to the mound. Perry (8-1) had been undefeated to this point , and had yet to pitch a bad game. The Tigers countered with Mickey Lolich (5-6). Perry was hit hard by the Tiger bats as he gave uo six runs in five innings with 2 homers - one by Norm Cash and the other by slugger Bill Melton. Lolich went the distance and was nearly unhittable accept for a bad sixth inning in which the Twins scored 4 runs. Cash hit a second hoimer off of reliever Tom Hall. Tigers 7-4. Game Three: For the second time within a week, Twins pitcher Dave Boswell (6-5) had the Tiger hitters off balance as he shut them out through seven innings. This gave Boswell 16 innings of shut out ball in a row against the Tigers. Meanwhile, the Twins strung a series of walks and singles together in the seventh to score 5 runs off of Tiger pitchers Tom Murphy (6-3), and Pat Dobson. The Twins made good use of aggresive base running in the inning as well. The Tigers finally cracked Boswell in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs. Twins 7-2. Game Four: Leo Cardenas broke out of a slump for the Twins with 3 for 5 performance that included 5 RBI and his 1st homer of the season. Meanwhile the Twins used four relievers to keep the Bengals at bay after they knocked starter Jim Kaat out of the game in the fifth inning. Reliever Dean Chance (4-0) was credited with the victory. Earl Wilson (3-5) took the loss for Detriot. The Tigers wasted a fine 5 for 5 effort by Jim "the Grey Fox" Northrup, and a fine 5 for 5 effort by Al Kaline. Kaline had 2 RBI and a homerun. The Tigers had 12 hits for the day, but stranded 10 base runners. Twins 10-3. |
