Go figure. Neil Allen has a tough series.
Game 1 In a close game it was the Montreal Expos 4, the New York NL Mets 2 at Shea Stadium.
Montreal scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning with 2 runs. Dan Driessen led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. Angel Salazar came next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Miguel Dilone then drew a walk. After another out, Ron Gardenhire came to the plate and doubled scoring two teammates. New York NL proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.
Vern Ruhle (1-6) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Andy McGaffigan got the save, his 1st. Neil Allen (3-2) was tagged with the loss in relief.
Game 2 In a lop-sided win the Montreal Expos offense put up 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th inning and ripped the New York NL Mets by a 8 to 3 count.
Montreal jumped on top to stay in the 7th inning plating an isolated run utilizing 3 base hits. Rick Miller smacked a single. Angel Salazar stepped up next and he laced a one-base hit. Dan Schatzeder was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Tim Raines followed and he banged out a single scoring the run. Montreal had 13 hits for the game and New York NL had 6.
Schatzeder (4-2) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Neil Allen (3-3) was the loser in relief. He allowed a few too many base runners giving up 9 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.
Montreal now has a record of 14-23. Jon Fellows was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games to the Expos' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'
Game 3 The Montreal Expos defeated the New York NL Mets by a score of 5 to 1 at Shea Stadium.
Montreal started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first plating an isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.
The winning pitcher was Joe Hesketh (1-2) who allowed 1 run in 7 innings. Dwight Gooden (4-4) was the losing pitcher. He allowed a few too many base runners giving up 10 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.
With this win, Montreal has a 15-23 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Jon Fellows was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'
Game 4 Bill Gullickson (2-4), with relief help from Bert Roberge, blanked the New York NL Mets at Shea Stadium. The Montreal Expos scored scored 3 runs for the victory.
Montreal won the game with a rally in the top of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. Miguel Dilone led off the inning for Montreal when he lined a single. Angel Salazar was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Dan Driessen then drew a walk. Tim Raines came up and he smacked a single to load the bases. Tony Bernazard stepped into the box and stroked a base-hit bringing in two baserunners. Montreal managed 7 hits in their victory.
Gullickson was helped out by Roberge who recorded his 1st save. The losing pitcher was Neil Allen (3-4) in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving up 3 hits and 1 walk.
