Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
The Cincinnati record in one-run games (temporarily outstanding earlier in the year) continues to come crashing back to earth, along with the Reds themselves.... Game 1: The two least powerful teams in the N.L. combine for 23 hits (nearly all of them singles) and 24 LOB. Both starting pitchers were lousy, but the Reds managed not to entirely blow a lead and prevailed by the score of 4-2 for our one bright spot in this series. After a VERY slow start, Hubie Brooks is now batting .309 and launched his first of two home runs at St. Louis in today's game. Game 2: Brooks was again practically the only offense the Reds could muster, homering and scoring both Cincy runs. Cincy spent the rest of time hitting into double plays, and the Reds finally broke the 2-2 tie in the 11th inning by choking up a leadoff triple to speedster Mike Hargrove, which was immediately followed by the game-losing RBI single off the bat of George Hendrick. Bill Dawley tossed 5 innings of near-perfect relief at the hapless Reds to earn his 5th relief win of 1984. Game 3: Aside from one accidental swing of Ron Oester's bat, the Reds had the Bad Luck Machine working on all cylinders: Mario Soto opened the day by allowing gophers to the first THREE batters he faced (one was a W, however, but he still scored). Cincy loaded the bases with nobody out in the 4th, but consecutive x-plays made by Gold Glove catcher Brad 'Johnny Bench' Gulden aborted that comeback. The Reds took a momentary lead when Oester delivered a 3-run homer in the Cincy 8th, but Hubie Brooks coughed up a timely single+error to allow St. Louis to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. Both team failed to seriously threaten in extra innings, with the Reds cooperatively rapping into critical GIDPs in the 14th and 15th innings. Finally in the bottom of the 15th, 'Johnny Bench' led off with a solo gopher to put the Reds out of their misery until next week. Alan |
