Game 1 In a good matchup it was the Montreal Expos 7, the San Francisco Giants 5 at Candlestick Park .
Montreal came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 8th inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. Harold Baines started the inning off right when he drew a walk. Denny Walling came next and he drew a walk. Ozzie Virgil then laced a base-hit to load the bases. Andre Dawson was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Frank Williams then had one get away for a wild pitch which scored a run. Angel Salazar added to the outburst and delivered a one-base hit plating another run. Vern Ruhle struck out, unable to help the rally. Tim Raines then delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.
Ruhle (3-6) was the winner allowing no runs in 3 innings. Williams (1-3) took the loss in relief. He pitched 3 innings allowing 4 hits and 3 walks.
Game 2 30,769 fans were treated to a fine game at Candlestick Park as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Montreal Expos won by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
Montreal scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. Miguel Dilone laced a base-knock. Tim Raines was the next batter, but he struck out. Tony Bernazard then drew a walk. Mike Schmidt stepped in and he ripped a base-knock scoring the run. Montreal managed 8 hits in their victory.
The winning pitcher was Steve Rogers (1-3) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. Rogers got relief help from Mike Armstrong who gained credit for his 1st save. Scott Garrelts (0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was unable to retire a batter and surrendered 1 hit and no walks.
Game 3 Left fielder Miguel Dilone had 3 base hits at Candlestick Park as the Montreal Expos beat the San Francisco Giants 7 to 5.
Montreal started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Dan Driessen who deflated the crowd as he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 4th of the season). San Francisco made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win went to Dan Schatzeder (5-2) who allowed 4 runs in 8 innings. Andy McGaffigan earned his 2nd save. Mike Krukow (4-4) was given the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 6 innings.
