Game 1 Bruce Sutter stopped Montreal cold and Willie McGee had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos by the count of 8 to 7.
Roy Lee Jackson (2-0) was called upon to do the job and he was the winning pitcher. He went 2 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 walk. Overall St. Louis out-hit Montreal 13 to 10.
Sutter earned the save, his 21st. Mike Armstrong (4-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 1/3 of an inning.
Game 2 Andre Dawson went deep and had 3 RBI at Busch Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 11 to 4.
Andy McGaffigan (1-0) labored throughout the game but hung around to record a victory. He gave up 14 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. St. Louis had 17 hits in the game while Montreal had 12, but Montreal had the more timely hits.
Kurt Kepshire (2-9) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks. Montreal now has a record of 36-36. With the loss, St. Louis has a record of 6-4 lately, 30-42, worst in the division overall.
Game 3 At Busch Stadium, the St. Louis fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Dave Lapoint (7-5) finally bested his Montreal opposite, Salome Barojas (5-4), by the score of 3 to 1.
St. Louis scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning. That was all the offense they were to need. St. Louis had 9 hits for the night while Montreal had 4.
Lapoint got relief help from Bill Dawley who gained credit for his 2nd save. Barojas was tagged with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and no walks in 6 innings.
Game 4 Bill Gullickson had 2 base hits and he delivered 9 solid innings as the Montreal Expos outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 0.
Montreal took the lead for good in the 6th inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Gullickson ripped a base-knock. Tim Raines stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Miguel Dilone then banged out a one-base hit scoring the run. Dilone took second on the throw. Montreal rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.
Gullickson (5-5) was credited with the shutout. Joaquin Andujar (5-8) was given the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 3 hits and 2 walks.
Mike Rescigno lamented, 'Gullickson was really aggressive today. He kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'
