Subject: Blue Jays @ Mariners
The Jays settle for a split thanks to a monstrous last-out choke in game 3 that even the Reds would envy, assuming that choking away every close game was actually a skill worth envying... Game 1: Toronto gets the series off on the right foot, despite playing Strand-O-Matic (up 12-6 in LOB) and almost pulling off yet ANOTHER last-out disaster. The Jays took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the final inning and then gave Seattle 4 runs after they were down to their 27th out. Charlie Hough tossed a complete game 13-hitter for the M's, while Dave Stieb was having a solid outing until HAL got the scalpel out in the 9th and Brent Gaff had a typical TOA bullpen outing. Final score: 7-5. Game 2: The teams equaled each other in hits (9) but Bruce Berenyi had a rare weak effort for the Jays, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 3-0 loss when he walked the bases loaded in the SEA 7th with 2 outs and then allowed a clutch double to Terry Francona (who played left field like Carl Yastrzemski in this series too, despite the disadvantage of being a '4'). Jim Beattie and three relievers dodged the raindrops and preserved the shutout. Game 3: Doyle "Hit Machine" Alexander took a 5-1 lead into the 9th, then choked away the game in the most dramatic fashion imaginable: allowing a bottom-of-the-9th, two-out GRAND SLAM. That only tied the contest however, and so it was left to Mark Clear to choke up the losing run in the *least* dramatic fashion possible: a walk, groundout, wild pitch and fielders choice. Dramatic or not, it got the job done. Game 4: Toronto built an early 6-0 lead for Mark Davis, who somehow proceeded not to blow it. Final score: 6-2. Mark Langston went the distance for Seattle, allowing 11 hits and fanning 12. Davis, not known for great control, walked nobody in his 8 innings of work. Alan |
