Baines came next and he tripled. Denny Walling then lashed a single. Despite losing, Pittsburgh out-hit Montreal 12 to 8.
The win went to Ed Lynch (4-6) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. Jeff Reardon earned the save, his 27th. Bert Blyleven (15-7) took the loss.
'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Lynch said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'
Game 2 In a close game it was the Pittsburgh Pirates 6, the Montreal Expos 4 at Three Rivers Stadium.

Despite losing Steve Bivens was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
