Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees
The Jays pointlessly had some nice RFA (Road Field Advantage) going until the final game of the series.... Game 1: Jim Acker's season debut was successful if not spectacular, and rookie reliever Tom Henke made his debut with 2 innings of solid relief as the Jays won by the score of 6-3. Rick Schu tripled in a run in his first major-league game and Ron Washington stole his first base of the season. Just to keep in form, Brent Gaff allowed a bottom of the ninth run but it made no difference in the outcome today. Game 2: Bobby Castillo's first TOA start went about as well as Acker's had and Mike Heath homered against his former teammates, helping Toronto to a 7-2 win over Ron Guidry and the Yankees. Another pitcher who might be "Key" to future Blue Jay efforts took the mound for the first time in his career today and retired one of the two batters he faced. Game 3: Jim Clancy returned from a long hiatus in the minors and tossed a few decent innings before blowing a 2-run lead and reminding us why he was sent to the minors in the first place. But George Bell's homer off of Dave Righetti regained the lead for the Jays and Henke recorded his first W in Toronto's 5-4 comeback victory. Game 4: The hits were even at 7 but the clutch hits were highly unbalanced; Jays lose 6-1. Rick Leach, also back from a stint on the inactive roster, notched a pair of hits but blew 2 x-plays during the first 3 NYA batters of the game, and the final outcome was in little doubt shortly thereafter. The lone bright spot was Jimmy Key's 3 hitless innings of relief during which he fanned 5 Yankees. Alan |
