Game 1 Sid Fernandez tossed a shutout as the seemingly unstoppable New York NL Mets beat the Montreal Expos by a score of 4 to 0.
Fernandez (6-4) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Montreal offense. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.44 to 3.04. New York NL had 8 hits for the night.
Bill Gullickson (7-12) was charged with the loss. This win by New York NL continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are a division leading 82-57. With the loss, the Montreal ballclub's record is 68-71.
Game 2 Dwight Gooden dominated striking out 10 Montreal batters and Mookie Wilson had 2 base hits as the sizzling New York NL Mets defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 3 to 1 at Shea Stadium.
Gooden (15-8) dominated Montreal hitters. He surrendered only 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. New York NL rapped out 10 hits for the night.
The loss was charged to Mark Calvert (4-4). He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. 'Everything felt great' Gooden said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'
Game 3 The red-hot New York NL Mets cruised to a 10 to 3 victory over the Montreal Expos at Shea Stadium.
New York NL went ahead for good in the 6th inning as they scored 3 runs on 1 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Howard Johnson who brought a roar from the partisan Shea Stadium fans when he smacked a three-run homer (his 10th of the season). For the game New York NL out-hit Montreal 12 to 9.
Steve Carlton (12-10) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 runs. Bryn Smith (11-8) took the loss. With the win, New York NL continues their noteworthy winning streak.
Game 4 In a close game the blistering-hot New York NL Mets got by the Montreal Expos by the score of 5 to 3.
New York NL scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. Darryl Strawberry led off and started the attack as he ripped a base-knock. Jon Fellows then called for a steal which was successful. George Foster dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Dick Schofield followed and he worked the squeeze play to perfection. One out later, Rafael Santana stepped up to the plate and he lined a base-hit. For the game New York NL out-hit Montreal 12 to 7.
Ron Darling (18-6) allowed 3 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Jesse Orosco was credited with his 23rd save. Vern Ruhle (3-10) was the loser.
New York NL continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division leading 85-57. They are 10-0 in their last ten games. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, Montreal is 2-8 lately and 68-74 on the year.
