Catcher Bill Schroeder smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Los Angeles
Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings by a score of 7 to 6
at Candlestick Park.
Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings.  Los Angeles ended
up winning it in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Mike Marshall
smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 19th of the season).  San Francisco was
set down quietly in the bottom of the 10th.
The winning pitcher was Lee Smith(3-8) who allowed 1 run in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Dale Murray(0-2) was charged with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run
and 1 hit in 1 inning.

Fernando Valenzuela hit a homerun and had 2 RBI and he racked up an impressive
total of 11 strikeouts as the Los Angeles Dodgers outscored the San Francisco
Giants 5 to 4.
Valenzuela(20-5) gave a fine effort for Los Angeles.  He surrendered 4 hits
and 5 walks in 8 innings.  Los Angeles had 8 hits for the game and San
Francisco had 4.
Lee Smith got the save, his 26th.  Danny Darwin(11-10) was the losing pitcher.
He allowed 8 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings.  Valenzuela was asked about his
big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these
numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands,
everything gets real still and quiet.  Just strange - but it's nice to be
able to take the crowd out of the game.'

Orel Hershiser struck out 13 batters as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the
San Francisco Giants in 10 innings by the score of 4 to 2 at Candlestick
Park.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings.  Los Angeles won it
in the 10th inning.  Joe Lefebvre led off and started the rally when he
delivered a base-hit.  Pedro Guerrero stepped up next and he drew a walk.
Dave Anderson then laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Mike Marshall came up and he
doubled.  After another out, Ed Romero followed, but he was set down on
strikes.  Los Angeles managed 8 hits in their victory.
Hershiser(6-8) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 9 innings. Hershiser got help
from Greg Minton who earned his 16th save.  Jim Gott(6-7) was the losing
pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 2 innings.
Hershiser didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up.  When told he
had 13 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a
decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many.  Say, that's pretty
good, isn't it?'
