Subject: Montreal at Chicago Week 9

The Expos pick themselves up out of the gutter, shower, shave, and clobber the Cubs winning all three games.  After a barnburner in game one, the Cubs play like Rover...they roll over and play dead in games two and three.

Game 1

Jack Aker closed the door on Chicago NL as the Montreal Expos won in dramatic

fashion over the Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 12 to 10 at Wrigley

Field.

Montreal had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs

using 4 hits. Kevin Collins opened up the inning nicely when he slapped a

one-base hit. Rusty Staub stepped up next and he drew a walk. Coco Laboy

then slapped a base-hit to load the bases. Bob Bailey struck out, unable to

help the rally. Mack Jones stepped into the box and lined a base-hit which

scored a run. John Bateman was the next batter, but he struck out. Gary

Sutherland came next and he stroked a single which was good for two more

runs. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Howie Reed(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Reed was

helped out by Aker who recorded his 12th save. Phil Regan(0-4) was the loser

in relief.

Steve Bivens was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and win

it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see the

fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of

unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very

enjoyable win tonight!'

Game 2

Mike Wegener tossed a shutout as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago NL

Cubs by a score of 8 to 0 at Wrigley Field.

Wegener(4-5) had a strong outing. He surrendered only 7 hits and 2 walks in 9

innings reducing his ERA from 2.35 to 2.09. Montreal rapped out 10 hits for

the night.

Vicente Romo(4-2) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 innings and

surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks.

Game 3

Gary Waslewski allowed 3 hits while blanking Chicago NL and right fielder

Rusty Staub hit a homerun and had 6 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Montreal

Expos embarrassed the Chicago NL Cubs by the lopsided score of 15 to

0.

Staub had a big day with his bat. He lost the ball over the fence for three

runs (his 4th of the season) in the 2nd inning and doubled with all three

runners coming home in the 5th inning. Montreal provided plenty of action in

the 2nd inning plating 5 runs and the 5th inning when they had 6 runs on 3

hits. Montreal had 11 hits for the afternoon.

Waslewski(2-6) was credited with the shutout. Woodie Fryman(2-5) was hit with

the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 3 innings of work.
