Subject: Reds @ Cubs

If Cincy wants to really participate in the 1969 pennant race, they need to
do better than split with the Cubs. Fortunately we managed to take 3 close
games and drop only one in disgusting fashion on a patented Clay Carroll
late-inning super-choke.

Game 1: Cincy wins a close one (4-2) as Fred Talbot throws 7.1 good innings
and Gary Nolan closes it out. Fergie Jenkins was saddled with his tenth
loss of 1969 despite pitching reasonably well (3 runs in 8 innings). Lee
May & Pete Rose homered in the game, accounting for 3 of the Reds 4 runs.
Chicago had cut a 3-0 Cincinnati lead to 3-2 in the eighth before reliever
Dick Farrell allowed the final Cincy run.

Game 2: The Big Choke, as Clay Carroll turns a 5-4 Cincy lead in the ninth
into a 6-5 loss when he serves up a Billy Williams gopher ball (Williams'
second homer of the game). Carroll (and his 5.46 ERA) may be the first
Machine Part to wind up seeking employment elsewhere. After the game,
dim-witted Cincinnati manager Alan Boodman finally announced that Gary
Nolan, Jack Billingham & Pedro Ramos will share closer duties, while Mr.
Carroll will be scrubbing toilets in the clubhouse.

Lee May, pursuing a spot on the N.L. All-Star roster, homered again for the
Reds. Cincy had built a 4-1 lead in this game, only to see it squandered.
Starters Don Wilson and Bill Hands were both ineffective.

Game 3: Another close one until the end. Cincy took a precarious 2-1 lead
into the ninth, but managed to tack on an additional two runs off reliever
Rich Nye, for a 4-1 final. An unusually well-controlled Tony Cloninger
(only 6 baserunners allowed in 7 IP) outdueled Vicente Romo for the win.

Jack Billingham notched save #2 as he & Cloninger limited the Chicago
batters to only 5 hits, all singles. The Reds, leaving 14 runners on base,
fumbled numerous chances to turn this nail-biter into a blowout.

Game 4: Another excruciatingly close one, pulled out by the Reds by the
score of 2-1 in 10 innings. Juan Pizarro went the distance for the Cubs,
allowing only nine Cincy baserunners in his 10 innings of work. Gerry
Arrigo threw 6.1 scoreless innings for the Reds, dropping his unlikely ERA
below 2.0 for the season, but pitched out of jams several times before being
yanked offstage by his nervous manager.

Cincy got on the board first in the sixth, when Johnny Bench smacked his
15th homer of the season. Chicago tied in up in the bottom of the eighth
off reliever Gary Nolan on a two-out Don Young single, driving home Larry
Hisle. In the tenth, Chico Ruiz opened with a single, was bunted to second
by Woody Woodward and doubled home by pinch-hitter Alex Johnson. Jack
Billingham allowed a single to Randy Hundley in the bottom of the inning,
but retired the side without further trouble.

The Reds now look to catch a break at home and not do something stupid like
get swept by San Francisco.

Alan
