Subject: Twins @ Yankees

The slumping Twins go into historic Yankee Stadium for a four game series with the charging Yankees and come out with a split.

The Twins took the bookends while the Yankees won two run one games in row - heretofore a Twin forte. The Twins are now a very mediocre 6-6 in June as they continue to waste base runners.

Game One:

Through five innings. Jim Kaat (6-2) and Mel Stottlemyre (9-8) pitched a feverish pitcher's duel as Stottlemyre spread out five harmless hits and Kaat gave up only two. In the top of the sixth, the Twins scored four runs off of ace and power hitting Mel "Babe" Stottlemyre as the hot Leo Cardenas sparked the rally. Cardenas hit a three run homer off of reliever Lindy McDaniel in the seventh as the Twins scored four more. The Twins scored two more in the eighth on there way to a 10-1 victory. Kaat got the win with relief support from Dean Chance, Bob Locker, and Tom "the Blade" Hall. The Twins would come to wish they had saved some of that run production for  games two and three of the series. Cardenas was 4 for 5 on the day with 4 RBI. Bobby Murcer hit a solo homer for the Yankees.

Game Two:

Yankee starter Fritz Peterson (8-5) pitched a gem as he three hit the Twins in a 2-1 Yankee victory. The Twins gave no run support to hard luck loser Dave Boswell (6-7). Boswell actually lowered his ERA to 3.17 in taking the loss. Tom "the Blade" Hall once again pitched well in relief as he continues to come back from his early season pitching disasters. Since April 30th. Hall has improved his record from 0-1 9.24 to 2-1 5.50.

While Peterson was nearly unhittable, super Twin pinch hitter Rick Renick hit a pinch hit homer in the top of the of the eighth. It is Renick's sixth homer of the year in only 56 ABS. For the Yankees, Horace Clark knocked in both runs making it the Fritz and Horace show.

Game Three:

This 13 inning thriller for Yankee was a series of wasted opportunies by the Twins. The Twins wasted one of the finest efforts of the year by struggling pitcher Larry Dierker. dierker went 11 innings giving up only 2 runs (1 earned) and five hits.

The Twins left the bases loaded in the second as they wasted an opportunity to have a big inning. Rod Carew grounded out to end the inning after Leo Cardenas hit a two run homer to put the Twins up 2-0. The Yankees got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Bobby Murcer hit a solo shot to dead center that rivaled some of the most impressive homers in Yankee stadium history.

In the top of the fifth, Carew and Oliva both singled. Killebrew walked yet again (50 walks on the year). with the bases loaded, Rich Reese hit into a 4-63 DP! Big inning gone before it happens.

The Twins still led 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. That would be batting champ, Jerry Kenney led off with a single. Dierker convinced manager Ramacier that he was fine and he was allowed to continue (Perranoski was ready in the pen). Kenney broke for second and George Mitterwald chucked the ball into center field. Kenney was standing on third with no outs. jim Fergosi hen hit a deep fly that scored Kenney easily.

Then Ron Perranoski (5-1) came back to earth with his first loss of the year as he gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 13th. Lead off batter Horace Clark hit a single and stole second - without benefit of a good lead. Then, relief pitcher Ken Tatum (1-0) was allowed to bat by HAL and he hit a game winning single off of Perranoski's card.  Yanks win 3-2!

Game Four:

The Twins get back to playing winning baseball as they defeat the Yankees 3-1.  Dean Chance (5-1) gets the win in relief as Jim Perry gives the Twins six solid innings. Perranoski bounces back to get his 14th save.

The red hot Leo Cardenas had the game winning hit, a ninth inning double scoring Graig Nettles who had walked. Stan Bahnsan (5-5) took the loss.

Cardenas is now hitting .280 with 3 homers and 34 RBI after hitting .236 with no homers and 15 RBI through May 28th.

Twins manager Ramacier is wondering if Leo has switched bodies with Harmon Killebrew. The Killer is getting plenty of walks and singles, but has only one homer in his last 17 games.
