Padres open up defense of their NL title by taking 2 of 3 against Atlanta, in what we can only hope is NOT an indication of things to come.

Game 1:  Lamar Hoyt allowed just 4 hits in 7 innings and SD scored twice in the 4th and 4 times in the 5th to lead 6-0. Bob Horner, in a sign of things to come, hit a 2 out 2 run homer off of Mark Thurmond to break up the shutout. Tony Gwynn had 3 hits and Keving McReynolds 3 rbi to lead the 6-2 win.

game 2: The Braves hit 4 home runs, 2 more from Horner and scored 5 straight times to break a 3-3 tie. San Diego scored twice in the 9th to make it an 8-5 finale. SD stranded 18 (yes 2 per inning) in this one and none were bigger than the bases loaded and no outs in the 5th inning of a 3-3 game. 2 strikeouts followed by an IW that loaded the bases and a groundout got the Braves out of the inning. They then scored 2 on their way to the win.

Game 3: Hawkins went 8 innings allowing just 3 hits and 1 run before turning it over to the bullpen and BOb Horner's personal batting practice pitchers. This time it was Luis Deleon serving up the hr to Horner. Luckily the Padres had put it away in the top of the 9th, scoring 4 runs on 4 walks, 2 singles and 2 sac flies.  SD only left 11 on base this time, giving them 40 for the 3 game series.

After 7 games, the Padres have allowed 16 homers with just 14 walks. Last season they gave up 96 homeruns all year long. Dravecky has given up 5 in 10 innings when he only gave up 19 all year in real life over 226 innings. Thurmond has allowed 2 hits so far, both homeruns. The team has scored just one more run than they have received walks, but that is 38-37. Opposition is 7-10 in BP homers so far. As said above, hopefully, not an indication of things to come.
